NEW!  Duplexes to Be Constructed in Woonsocket
Posted 05/15/06

The Greater Revitalization Of Woonsocket, (GROW committee), met Thursday night, April 20th and committed to constructing duplexes in Woonsocket. The GROW committee has been meeting on a regular basis and has been monitoring the housing needs of the community. The duplexes work well for retired couples, elderly and individuals that don’t require large-scale housing and that want less upkeep. By offering duplexes the GROW committee hopes elderly or retired couples in the community who want to downscale their housing can offer their houses for sale and move into a duplex. This will help to open more family housing in our community by getting existing homes to become available.

The GROW committee plans on constructing 2 to 6 duplexes south of Prairie View Care Center. Construction on the first duplex will start this summer and should be completed by September.

If you are interested in the duplexes you can contact the GROW committee members for information such as the floor plans, costs and availability. The GROW committee is taking orders or commitments from those who want a duplex. Watch the Sanborn Journal for our open house. The open house will be scheduled when the first duplex is near completion.

GROW committee contacts include Gay Swenson and Jackie Evers at 796-4422, Ray Ohlrogge at 796-4615, Dale Swenson at 796-4394 and Darren Swenson at 796-4916.

As the Woonsocket School District sets in motion their plans to build the new high school in 2006, the Woonsocket Development Corporation is launching efforts to find funding to develop a new housing district, purchase lots for resale and attract new commercial businesses. The Woonsocket City Council, Woonsocket School District and various fund raising organizations have created $1,040,000.00 worth of improvements to the city and school. In the near future you will be able to go to www.sanborncodevcorp.com to view the many improvements that have taken place in our community. The web site will also allow you to share your ideas and comments though an email link.

The community of Woonsocket has many plans to revitalize their city to attract future generations of citizens. As with any nonprofit organization of volunteers, funding for the various activities has to come from donations. The Woonsocket Development Corporation is asking for a monetary donation to continue to the work to keep your hometown and school moving forward. As was in the past, is today, and will be in the future, the city of Woonsocket and the Woonsocket School District will be a great place to live, receive an education and foster friendships.

City of Woonsocket Works to
Improve Recreation Opportunities

Swimming hole before improvements

The City of Woonsocket recently completed a large recreation improvement project. In August, 2001, city officials held a community meeting to identify what areas the citizens of Woonsocket felt should be top priorities for community development. From that meeting, the city began work on the swimming pool, recreational trail, and the playground, and there are other projects planned for 2006.

The following excerpt, taken from the Daily Republic, December 9, 2004 (“Woonsocket builds unusual swimming area”, by Seth Tupper) summarizes the project: “Since its founding in 1883, the City of Woonsocket has tapped artesian wells to feed its image as ‘The Town with the Beautiful Lake’. Soon, the same artesian well that feeds the town’s Lake Prior will also feed an unorthodox swimming hole.

Work is scheduled to begin today on a concrete wall that will divide part of the lake into an 80-by-80 foot swimming area. The ‘pool’ will feature a concrete deck, floor, and sidewalls, and a zero-depth entry that will slope to 5 feet. A filtration system will be used on the water drawn from the lake.

A three-flumed waterslide structure will be added within six weeks. The city plans to renovate a bathhouse at the site and add some playground equipment. ‘We talked about building a new pool, but money-wise it was not feasible,’ said Tara Weber, City finance officer. ‘We weren't going to do a bond issue to build a $400,000 pool.’ Instead, the project will cost about [$275,000] and will be funded by grants and sales tax revenue. The completed pool was fully functional during summer of 2005.

During the 1990’s, the city walled off part of the lake to create a swimming hole. But lake water washed underneath the wall, allowing moss and fish to creep into the swimming area. The new wall will be constructed 12 feet back from the existing wall, and the space between will be filled with dirt and topped with a concrete walkway. The city also plans to build a recreational trail around the lake, which covers an area the size of a city block.”

District III partnered with the City of Woonsocket to complete this multi-faceted project. Eric Ambroson, Planner from District III, did the renderings of the proposed project site that can be seen above. Lori Cowman and Matt Kerr have assisted the City with various grant applications, which include the following successful awards: a CDBG of $57,000 for the replacement of the walking bridge; a Land & Water Conservation Fund grant of $31,000 for playground and park equipment; and a Recreational Trails Program grant of $26,328 for the 2,338 foot concrete trail around Lake Prior.

In 2006, the City of Woonsocket will begin work on the pool bathhouse, picnic shelters, and additional landscaping. All the improvements will end up costing over $400,000. The city has received funding assistance from various sources.
