Swimming hole before improvements |
|
The City of Woonsocket recently completed a large recreation improvement project. In August, 2001, city officials held a community meeting to identify what areas the citizens of Woonsocket felt should be top priorities for community development. From that meeting, the city began work on the swimming pool, recreational trail, and the playground, and there are other projects planned for 2006.
The following excerpt, taken from the Daily Republic, December 9, 2004 (“Woonsocket builds unusual swimming area”, by Seth Tupper) summarizes the project: “Since its founding in 1883, the City of Woonsocket has tapped artesian wells to feed its image as ‘The Town with the Beautiful Lake’. Soon, the same artesian well that feeds the town’s Lake Prior will also feed an unorthodox swimming hole.

Work is scheduled to begin today on a concrete wall that will divide part of the lake into an 80-by-80 foot swimming area. The ‘pool’ will feature a concrete deck, floor, and sidewalls, and a zero-depth entry that will slope to 5 feet. A filtration system will be used on the water drawn from the lake.
A three-flumed waterslide structure will be added within six weeks. The city plans to renovate a bathhouse at the site and add some playground equipment. ‘We talked about building a new pool, but money-wise it was not feasible,’ said Tara Weber, City finance officer. ‘We weren't going to do a bond issue to build a $400,000 pool.’ Instead, the project will cost about [$275,000] and will be funded by grants and sales tax revenue. The completed pool was fully functional during summer of 2005.
During the 1990’s, the city walled off part of the lake to create a swimming hole. But lake water washed underneath the wall, allowing moss and fish to creep into the swimming area. The new wall will be constructed 12 feet back from the existing wall, and the space between will be filled with dirt and topped with a concrete walkway. The city also plans to build a recreational trail around the lake, which covers an area the size of a city block.”

District III partnered with the City of Woonsocket to complete this multi-faceted project. Eric Ambroson, Planner from District III, did the renderings of the proposed project site that can be seen above. Lori Cowman and Matt Kerr have assisted the City with various grant applications, which include the following successful awards: a CDBG of $57,000 for the replacement of the walking bridge; a Land & Water Conservation Fund grant of $31,000 for playground and park equipment; and a Recreational Trails Program grant of $26,328 for the 2,338 foot concrete trail around Lake Prior.
In 2006, the City of Woonsocket will begin work on the pool bathhouse, picnic shelters, and additional landscaping. All the improvements will end up costing over $400,000. The city has received funding assistance from various sources.
